If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated or affect my personal working conditions,

What to say (Use this exact wording)

“I respectfully request that my union representative be present.”

Without representation, I choose not to answer any questions.

If you are told that the meeting will be short, informal, or that you don’t have the right to representation, repeat your request. Do not answer questions without your union representative present.

If you are asked to meet with management

  1. Pause before answering questions.
  2. Clearly request your union representative.
  3. Use the approved wording shown here.
  4. Wait for representation before continuing.

These rights come from Weingarten v. NLRB (1975). They exist to protect you from being pressured into saying something that could be used against you.

This is general information, not legal advice. Consult your union representative with specific questions.
